Steven "Steve" Franklin Dodson

Steven “Steve” Dodson, 59, of Mossy, passed away Friday, November 7 th , 2025 surrounded by wife, kids, and grandchildren. Steve was born February 16, 1966 in Oak Hill, WV. He grew up in Kingston being raised by his grandma “Nanny”, and Aunt Emma.

He met and fell in love with his wife, Veva, of 40 years in 1983. Steve told anyone that would listen that he was going to marry that woman and in December of 1985, he kept that promise and they said I do. They spent the next few years building a life together, traveling, and falling in love all over again. Anyone who knew Steve knew about Veva and the love they have for each other.

After spending the first couple of years of their marriage with just the 2 of them, they welcomed their first daughter, Marysa, in March of 1988 who he shared a love for game chickens with. In July of 1993, they welcomed their second daughter, Katie (Frankie). Katie and Steve would go on to share a passion for bluetick hounds and the outdoors. In 2011, Katie started dating a man who Steve loved like a son, Bart “Franklin” Tatum jr. Their third daughter, Emily (Tyler), would come along in July of 1996, who would become his fishing and food buddy. He taught her how to cast a fishing pole before he was even able to get her leave a pacifier alone. The baby of the family, Stephie (Nick), would come along in August of 1998. Stephie and Steve were inseparable, and he would openly admit that she was his best friend. If you saw Steve or Stephie, the other was somewhere nearby. Just when they thought their family was complete, they welcomed and raised their older two grandchildren, their first granddaughter, Rayna (Isaac), born in April of 2007, who he loved to learn about plants and crystals with, and first grandson, Kingston, in April of 2009, who he shared an enthusiasm of auto mechanics and dogs with.

Steve loved nothing more than his wife, kids, and grandchildren and was the proudest grandpa. Lovingly called “Poppy” by his seven grandchildren, Rayna and Kingston ( who they raised), Zarah, Bentley, Dallas, Addi, and Sammie. He and his grandchildren were obsessed with each other and spent all the time they could together. Some of their favorite things to do together were working on four wheelers, learning about new herbs and plants, playing board games, coloring, making pork chops, talking about history and conspiracy theories, spending time outdoors, relaxing on the couch, eating pork rinds, and watching cartoons together.

Steve was a true family man and was loved by countless family members including siblings Trina, Little Dave, Lisa (Rick), Elizabeth, Earl (Rita), and Joey and so many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was proceeded in death by his “Nanny”, his brother, Little Dave, Aunt Emma, Uncle Truman, Joe Blevins, Uncle Larry, Sadie Hunter Adkins, and Earl Dodson Sr. He helped co-host the “Hunter-Treadway Reunion” every June to celebrate family with his cousins from Ohio, Paula and Eddie, and Bub and brought family together from across the country.

Steve was employed by the WV Turnpike for over 30 years. The coworkers he met there would become family to him. He was also an avid outdoorsman and always had bluetick hounds and game chickens in his yard. He has spent his life following behind a bluetick in the West Virginia mountains. He spent most mornings and evenings having coffee with his wife, kids, and grandkids on his mountain, Dodson Mountain, where he will also be laid to rest. Steve was a once in a lifetime kind of man and will be greatly missed by everyone who has met him.
