Roy Rogers Tanner, Jr., 56, of Oak Hill, passed away Monday, July 14, 2025, at CAMC Plateau Medical Center in Oak Hill, WV, after a long-fought illness.
Born February 13, 1969, in Webster Springs, WV, he was the son of the late Roy Rogers Tanner, Sr. and Doris Arleen Green Tanner.
Roy was a 1988 graduate of Shady Spring High School, where he was a 3-time county-wide wrestling champ. After graduating high school, he enlisted and served his country proudly as a United States Marine Corps, completing basic training at Camp Lejeune. He served in Operation Desert Shield in 1990 then Operation Desert Storm in ‘91 until becoming a proud Veteran.
He then spent a number of years employed at Lowes and 84 Lumber. Ultimately, he became disabled following the necessity of a kidney transplant, the gift of life being awarded to him from his sister, Kathy.
In leisure, he enjoyed following his favorite teams, the Pittsburgh Pirates and Steelers, antiquing, fishing, and ginsenging. A member of Calvary Baptist Church in Oak Hill, he was grounded in his faith.
He is preceded in death by his parents.
He loved, most of all, his family.
As we mention those he loved most: Psalm 34:18 The LORD is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit
Those left to cherish his legacy and memory include his loving wife, Gina Lucky Tanner, daughter, Kimberly Dawn; son, Derek Allen Tanner; granddaughter, Emily Dawn Prater; brother, Richard Tanner; sisters, Kathy Green, Regina Hensley (Scott), Marilyn Brewster (James), and Leslie Brooks; and his best friend who was like a brother to him Glen Barnett.
Funeral will be 12:00 Noon on Friday, July 18, 2025, at Calvary Baptist Church with Pastor Greg Swisher officiating; military honor ceremony being performed by the Wyoming County Veterans Honor Guard. Burial with full military rites will follow at West Virginia Memorial Gardens in Calvin, WV.
