Ronald Hugh Garrett, 76, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, May 27, 2024 following a short illness. A lifelong resident of southern West Virginia, Ron’s life was one of service to his family, his state, and his country.
Born and raised in Mount Hope, West Virginia, Ron graduated from Mount Hope High School in 1966 and served in the United States Air Force from 1966 to 1970. He went on to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in Biology from West Virginia University Institute of Technology. Over the course of his life, Ron worked as a high school teacher and as a roof bolter in the coal mines before spending nearly 30 years as an Environmental Enforcement Officer for the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection.
Ron loved the outdoors, his hometown of Mount Hope, and the state of West Virginia. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, and visiting West Virginia’s state parks. He enjoyed watching his hometown high school football team, the Mount Hope Mustangs, and enjoyed West Virginia University football as well. He was a member of Glen Jean Church of God and an avid Bible prophecy scholar. On many occasions, he had the opportunity to share his extensive knowledge of God’s word by teaching in formal and informal settings alike. Ron was also a natural storyteller, and enjoyed regaling friends and family with tales of his many colorful experiences from childhood through to his retirement. His grandchildren were his pride and joy, and he delighted in spending time with them.
Ron was preceded in death by his father Hugh Lynn Garrett, his mother Virginia Eloise Burton Garrett, and his siblings: Sandra Lynn Garrett, Donald “Donnie” Gene Garrett, Paul Timothy Burton Garrett, Brenda Sue Garrett Pino, and a stillborn infant brother. He is survived by his loving wife of 39 years, Peggy Louise Piper Garrett; by his first wife, Cindy Shrewsberry; by his four daughters, Michelle Ree Garrett Hiser and husband Joshua of Oak Hill, West Virginia; Tracy Dawn Garrett Mauro of Hinton, West Virginia; Melissa Louise Garrett Jensen and husband Lindsay of Mount Hope, West Virginia; Tammy Lynnette Garrett Markert and husband David of Mount Hope, West Virginia; and by his nine grandchildren, from oldest to youngest: Andrew (Chase) Harper, Tristen Harper, Haden Hiser, Payton Mauro, Gabriel Jensen, Sylvana Jensen, Arthur Jensen, Evelyn Markert, and Eden Markert. Others left to cherish his memory include his beloved nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews, as well as his church family and the many friends and acquaintances he made while serving for the WV DEP.
Ron’s funeral service will be held at 1:00 pm on Monday, June 3, 2024 at the New Beginning Church of God in Glen Jean, West Virginia, with Reverend Jerry Cantley and Reverend Tom Fife officiating. Burial will follow in High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill. Visitation will begin at 11:00 am for family and 12:00 for friends at the church prior to the start of the service.
