Richard Eugene Smith, better known as Smitty, 71, of Kincaid, WV passed away at home on December 30th, 2025, after a brief illness. He was surrounded by love and peace as he passed.
He was born October 5th, 1954, in Oak Hill, WV, to the late Jesse and Kathleen Smith. He was a 1974 graduate of Collins High School.
Many people will remember Richard’s smiling face from the Kroger in Oak Hill, where he worked for 47 years. For the last eight years he has enjoyed his retirement to the fullest. He took a long awaited train trip across the United States, and was always ready to share tales and photos of his travels. Richard loved nature. He took great joy in tending to his elephant ear plants, feeding the birds and squirrels, and watching his hummingbird feeder. He rediscovered his love of outdoor adventuring, and started snow skiing again. He looked forward to going snowtubing with his son-in-law, Jason, every winter. Richard had a lifelong love of sci-fi and loved taking part in a Saturday night sci-fi film club. He had two dogs, Onyx and Bigg Dawg, that he loved deeply. They will continue to live a spoiled life with his daughter.
Richard is survived by his daughter, Sarah Blevins and son-in-law, Jason Blevins of Beckley. He is also survived by four siblings, Evelyn Hizer of Oak Hill, Tilmon Smith of Oak Hill, Violet Hatfield (Alvin) of Brier Creek, and Jesse Smith of Frankfort, KY.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Mary at Bowers Hospice House.
As per his request, Richard will be cremated. A celebration of his life will be held Saturday, January 3rd, 2026 at 3pm at Tyree Funeral Home Chapel in Oak Hill. A visitation for friends and family will be available an hour before at 2pm.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Bowers Hospice House/Hospice of Southern West Virginia.
Carry on, my wayward son. There’ll be peace when you are done. Lay your weary head to rest. Don’t you cry no more.
