Phyllis Jean (Stevens) Sulesky

Phyllis Jean Sulesky, 86, of Oak Hill passed into God's loving care on Tuesday, July 22, 2025. She was born December 11, 1938 at her family's home on Salem Road near Oak Hill, WV. She passed away at home with her family by her side after a short, but brave battle with cancer.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Frank Sulesky; as well as her parents, Haven and Anna Mae (Fitzwater) Stevens. Additionally, she was preceded in death by her daughters, Teresa Ann (Sullivan) Carden and Jean Marie (Sullivan) Barnett and also her sister, Margaret Ann Kepto.

Phyllis graduated High School in 1955 and was accepted into Nursing school, but was turned away upon arrival for being too young at 16 due to skipping a grade in high school. Returning home, she worked at a local drug store and her like took a different path. She was the proud mother of four children from her first marriage to Duff Sullivan. She was a wonderful mother, mother in law, step mother, and grandmother. She loved spending time with her family.

Earlier in life she participated in bowling in local, state, and national tournaments. She was an avid reader and a member of a local book club. She enjoyed cooking, knitting, word puzzles, watching golf, and visiting several churches in the area. She was fun, had a great sense of humor, and had a way of taking whatever life threw her way and making the best of it. She had a good life and continued to work in hospitality until her last few months of her life.

Phyllis leaves behind her daughter, Sandy (Sullivan) Smith (Allen); son, Duff  Wayne Sullivan; stepdaughter, Cyndie (Sulesky) Duncan (David);  stepsons, Mike Sulesky (Robin) and Joe Sulesky. She also leaves behind 7 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; and a brother, Everett Buddy Stevens (Louise).

She will be missed by many nieces and nephews, some of whom she thought of as her own children. Many friends will feel her loss. She was deeply loved and we were greatly blessed to have her in our lives.

A memorial service will be 1:00 pm, Saturday, August 2, 2025 at  LifeBridge Assembly of God Church 1513 Main Street East, Oak Hill WV, 25901 with Pastor Shirlie Watson officiating. As per her wishes, Phyllis will be cremated.

Phyllis was blessed to be cared for and visited in her home by Hospice of Southern West Virginia. In lieu of flowers, her family asks that you consider donating to your local Hospice in her memory or perhaps having a meal with a loved one and sharing a favorite memory of Phyllis..
