Loretta was born in Visalia California to Henry G Schmidt and Marguerite Dunaway Schmidt. From the get-go, she never met a stranger. She was known for her generous nature, and her love of family, history, animals, and talking with people. Her love of history and personal stories translated to a 3-decade career with the National Park Service. She was well-traveled and served in multiple locations, including Altoona PA, Oyster Bay NY, and San Juan Puerto Rico before finishing her career at New River Gorge.

She is survived by her sister Margot, her nephew Paul, his wife DawnAnn and their sons, and her nieces Kirstie and Megan and their families. She was devoted to the many dogs and cats she rescued and is survived by O Danny Boy and Mickey. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to New River Animal Rescue. A funeral service celebrating her life will be held at 1pm on Saturday, February 21st, St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, Oak Hill.
