Obituary

Lois Jane “Janie” (Painter) Williams Wingrove, 81, of Maple Fork passed away on Monday, July 20, 2026 at her residence with her loving family by her side. Born May 26, 1945 in Dothan, WV she was the daughter of the late Rev. Cecil Painter and Esta Roop Painter. Janie was a 1963 graduate of Collins High School in Oak Hill, WV. She worked for a local magistrate and later in sales at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.

  • As a young adult, Janie was encouraged by her parents to attend revival at their church to meet a nice young man they had met, Roger Lee Williams. The two were later married and welcomed three children. Unfortunately, life can take unexpected turns, as Janie became a widow at 38 after 20 years of marriage. She had many struggles and hardships through those first few years, but she handled them with grace and determination for her family. After several years, while working her second job as a waitress, she found someone to spend her days with. She was married to Robert Lee Wingrove for 33 years. Janie always said she didn’t know how she was blessed with two good husbands, both of which thought the world of her.

  • Janie was a lifetime caregiver to so many and never forgot others, often sending cards and notes so people felt loved and remembered. She also loved to laugh and never hesitated to spread her witty thoughts with the world. But if she didn’t agree with you, she had no filters in letting you know. She was devoted to supporting her grandchildren, spending her time at football and baseball games, awards ceremonies and buying all the t-shirts, popcorn, chocolate or other gadget they were selling. Whether it was Gunsmoke, Heartland or 60 Minutes, you didn’t disturb her tv time. Our matriarch is now walking the streets of gold, but she will always be our “Queen Jane”.

  • In addition to her parents and both husbands, she was preceded in death by sister Phyllis Painter Toney, brother Claude Painter, in-laws Clarence and Eunice Williams, Oather and Thelma Wingrove; sisters-in-law Rose Painter, Sharon Hunt, Mary Ann Coots, Dorothy Williams, Rita Allen, Sandra Johnson and Ruth Wingrove as well as brothers-in-law Charles Williams, Damon Coots, David Toney, Jerry Wingrove and Rick Thornquest.

  • Those left to cherish her memory include her son Rodney Williams (Debbie) of Beckley, daughter Sandy Williams of Maple Fork and daughter Leah Williams of Maple Fork; four grandsons, Dakota Wriston (Kayla), Logan Wriston (Bryana), Chase Williams (Rachel), Cooper Williams (Brooke); four great- grandchildren Jonah, Owen, Harper and Atlas; sisters-in-law Carolyn Toney and Luann Thornquest; brothers-in-laws Denny Wingrove, Lum Toney, and Larry Arbogast; a favorite cousin Gloria Ewing and many nieces, nephews and extended family.

  • Services will be at Tyree Funeral Home in Oak Hill on Thursday, July 23, 2026 at 11am, with Pastor Doug Holley officiating. Friends and family may visit with the family one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.

  • A special thank you to the staff of Hospice of Southern WV for your extraordinary care and compassion for Janie and her family.

  • In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to Hospice of Southern WV in her name.
