Jean Maria Breckenridge (Byers) of Mt. Hope, West Virginia, entered into the loving arms of Jesus on Saturday, December 20, 2025, following a long and courageous battle with her health. Through God’s mercy, she was healed—free from pain, free from sorrow, and finally at peace.
Jean was preceded in death by her parents, Nana and Maurice Breckenridge; her great-grandson, Stetson Scarbrough; her sister, Linda Thorne; and her brothers, Frank and Wayne Breckenridge.
She leaves behind a loving family who meant everything to her: her children, Herbert Byers III, Maurice Byers, Tina (Brandon) Boles, and Bobby (Jamie) Byers; along with her cherished “children at heart,” Renea (Mark) Pittman, Rick Gilkerson, and Tommy Gilkerson. She is also survived by ten grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, each of whom held a special place in her heart.
Jean had a deep love for flowers and could be found planting them in every empty space she could find. She took great pride in her yard and never failed to give careful instructions to her friend who cut her grass—making sure he knew exactly where not to mow near her flowers, directions he patiently followed every time.
Above all else, Jean loved her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren fiercely. She prayed faithfully and fervently for each one and longed to spend more time with them. Though her absence leaves a deep ache, her family finds comfort in knowing she is healed, whole, and home at last.
She will be deeply missed and forever loved.
“And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.”
Revelation 21:4
