Jan Alicia (McGraw) Shumate

Jan Alicia (McGraw) Shumate, 68, left this world on Saturday, February 14, 2026, at Raleigh General Hospital in Beckley, WV. She was born on Saturday, July 13, 1957, to Susie (Claiborne) McGraw and Paul McGraw, Sr. in Pineville, WV. She married the love of her life, Mike Shumate, on November 9, 1974 in McGraws, WV.

Jan was a devoted mother, grandmother, sister, and Nana. She found joy in the outdoors, especially in her beautiful flower garden that she took such great pride in. Her kitchen was filled with love, particularly during the holidays when she baked her treasured Christmas candy and other homemade treats that brought family together. Jan’s mother asked her to take care of the family and she dedicated the rest of her life to caring for them. Her kindness, strength, and nurturing spirit leave a lasting legacy in the family that she loved so dearly.

Jan was preceded in death by her parents, Paul and Susie McGraw; father and mother in law, Dewane and June Shumate; brothers, Sam, Paul Jr., and John McGraw; sisters, Laura Ann and Maridonna McGraw, Patricia Blevins, Suzanne Lavell; brother in law, Keith Shumate; nephews, Brian, Adam, and Dewey McGraw, Ryan Blevins, and Jeremy Lavell; and great niece Beth Blevins.

Those left to cherish her memory are her husband, Mike Shumate; son, Chris (Angela) Shumate; grandchildren, Gabriel and Ella Shumate; sister, Caroline (Rudy) McGraw; brothers, Rick (Judy) McGraw, Kenny (Yvonne) McGraw and Andy McGraw; brother in law, Victor (Kay) Shumate; sisters in law, Debbie Shumate, Karen (Joel) Maynor, and a host of nieces and nephews, to many of whom she was known as Nana.

A celebration of life for family and friends will be held at 3pm Saturday, August 29th, 2026 at the McGraw Family Cemetery with a reception to follow at her brother Kenny McGraw’s residence at 1021 McGraw Hollow Road.
