Donald “Butch” Clyde Elder, 82, entered his eternal rest on Wednesday, March 4, in the company of his loving family. Born on August 20, 1943, in Fayette County, WV, he was the youngest son of William Edward Elder and Hessie (Burgess) Elder. Butch grew up on Elderberry Farm in Sanger with his eight siblings: Willie (Inez), Lawrence (Annette), James (Margaret), Charlotte (Charlie), Gene (Maxine), Frank (Libby), Betty (Junior), and Bob (Carolyn, Joyce).
Butch graduated from Collins High School and worked briefly as a welder in Charleston, WV. He spent the remainder of his career in the retail business, beginning at the Midget Market in Oak Hill, and eventually owning his own businesses: Fayetteville IGA, Rainelle IGA, Oak Hill IGA, Mount Hope IGA, B & B Furniture Mart in Fayetteville and Rainelle. He spent the final years of his life owning and operating Kountry Korner. He was an entrepreneur at heart and loved interacting with his many friends in the community.
Butch proposed to his beloved Patricia “Patsy” Carol Blevins at the top of the West Virginia State Fair Ferris wheel. They were married on December 21,1963 for almost 60 years. They are survived by their two daughters Terri Massie (Paul), and Trina Sims (Chad); four grandchildren, Sutton Higginbotham (Jarrod), Torre Greathouse (Mark), Isaac Massie (Natalie) and Hanna Walters (Ryan); and two great grandchildren, Bryson Higginbotham and Vivian Massie.
Butch and Patsy were members of the Oak Hill Church of the Nazarene where they served for many years in various capacities. They especially loved hosting family and church events in their home.
Butch was a skilled carpenter and gardener. He loved making projects with and for his daughters and grandchildren, and he enjoyed sharing his gardening knowledge with anyone who would listen.
Thank you to his many employees and customers for the lovingkindness and support shown to him over the years. A special thank you to his church family, Kountry Korner employees and the Bowers Hospice House of Southern West Virginia for their care and compassion.
Funeral service will be held 12:00 Noon on Monday, March 9, 2026 at the Oak Hill Church of the Nazarene in Oak Hill with Pastor Paul Neil officiating. Entombment will follow at High Lawn Memorial Park in Oak Hill.
Friends may visit with the family from 10:30 AM until service time at the church.
