Charles William "Bud" Thompson, 92, of Mullens, passed away on Thursday, April 16, 2026 at his residence following a long illness with his family by his side.
Born October 2, 1933 at Allen Junction, he was the son of the late Issac and Winnie (Haga) Thompson.
Bud grew up in Corinne and he graduated from Mullens High School in 1951. After graduation he enlisted in the US Army. After his honorable discharge he became a member of the WV Air National Guard in Charleston, WV. Bud attended the Mullens United Methodist Church. He worked at A&P in Mullens, Sears in Mullens, Dillon, SC, and Clifton Forge, VA, Metropolitan Insurance in Pineville and retired after many years at Eastern Coal/Peabody as a Mine Accountant having worked at Stotesbury, Herndon, Lightfoot, and Kopperston.
He was a member of the Mullens Masonic Lodge #151 A.F.& A.M. Since 1965 he has held many offices and became the Worshipful Master in 1972, 1975 through 2004 spanning 29 straight years. He served as Master again in 2009-2011 and 2018-2022 with a total of 38 years as Worshipful Master. He received his 50 year pin in 2015. Charles was a member of the Admiral Chapter #50 Royal Arch Masons. He was a longtime member of the Mullens Moose Lodge.
Bud was active in the American Legion and helped obtain the Veterans Wall in Mullens. Years ago, he was a member of the Southgate CB Club and the Guyandotte Twirlers. In his younger days he sang with quartets in the area. In his leisure, he enjoyed golfing, telling jokes, and spending time with his family.
Along with his parents he is also preceded in death by brothers, Russell Thompson, Bruce Thompson, and Jack Thompson; and sisters, Nancy Crist Anaya and Carol Turner.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 68 years, Joann Phillips Thompson; two daughters, Jennifer Morgan and her husband, Clay of Bluefield, VA and Kim Collier and her husband, John of Lagrangeville, NY; his grandchildren, Matthew Morgan and his wife, Emily of Princeton, Emily Morgan of Bluefield, VA, Logan Collier and Ethan Collier both of Lagrangeville, NY; one great granddaughter, Clara Jean Morgan of Princeton; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Services will be 12 Noon, Tuesday, April 21, 2026 at the Mullens United Methodist Church, Mullens with Pastor Mark Shrader officiating. Entombment will follow in Palm Memorial Gardens, Matheny.
Friends may call one hour prior to services Tuesday at the church.
Pallbearers will be member of the Mullens Masonic Lodge #151 A.F. & A.M.
Graveside rites will be conducted by the Wyoming County Honor Guard and by members of Mullens Masonic Lodge #151 A.F. & A.M.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations of sympathy be made to the City of Mullens Foundation, P.O. Box 266, Mullens, WV 25882 or to Hospice of Southern West Virginia, 454 Cranberry Drive, Beckley, WV 25801.
