Virginia A. Shumate

February 22, 1916 — September 23, 2017

Virginia Spradlin Shumate passed away Saturday, September 23, 2017, at the age of 101, in the Lake Taylor Transitional Care Hospital in Norfolk, Virginia, where she had been a resident since 2015.

She was born and raised in Glen Jean, West Virginia, the daughter of the late Eugene and Dorothea Spradlin. She was a wonderful mother, homemaker and skilled at all types of needlework, especially knitting, quilting and sewing. She was a member of the Glen Jean Union Church and the Glen Jean Women’s Mission.

She was predeceased by her husband, James Earl Shumate, and brother, Eugene Christopher Spradlin.

She is survived by her two sons, David Lee Shumate of West Palm Beach, Florida and James Michael Shumate and his wife, Gail, of Norfolk Virginia; four grandchildren, Kim Lee Shumate, Sue Lynn Rodriquez, Michael Shumate and David Shumate; seven great grandchildren, Alex Brock,
David Brock, Jost Rodriquez, Charlotte Shumate, Kenan Shumate, Micah Shumate and Ella Shumate; and her niece, JoAnne Spradlin Barnes and her husband, Darrell of Virginia Beach, Virginia.

A graveside service will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, September 29, 2017 at High Lawn Memorial Park in Oak Hill with Pastor Jessie Parker officiating.
