John Edward Kizer

John Edward Kizer, 87, of Mount Hope, WV, passed away at Bowers Hospice House on December 21, 2018 following a long illness.
John was born in Mount Hope, WV on February 9, 1931. He attended Mount Hope High School and served in the Marine Corps from 1947-1951 during the Korean War where he received two purple hearts.
John enjoyed watching Nascar, hunting and fishing, or showing horses. John was an excellent horseman and participated in competitions frequently during the 60’s and 70’s, even winning a state champion title in pole bending in 1969. John was a coal miner turned entrepreneur. Alongside his brother, Paul, the two founded Harvey Energy from 1981-1991. A caring family man, he always made sure everyone else was taken care of, always putting himself last. John was also a humorous man, he would do his infamous belly roll in front of anyone to make them laugh!
He was preceded in death by his parents; Ernest Edward Kizer and Ruby Accord Kizer, from Mount Hope WV, and two siblings; Kitty Loretta Gerhold from Detroit, Michigan and H. Paul Kizer from Mount Hope, WV.
Surviving are his wife of 24 years, Inge Hoke Kizer of Asbury, WV, 4 children, John “JP” Kizer and wife Kim of Sevierville, TN, Ernest “Nicky” Kizer and wife Pam of Mount Hope, WV, Lisa Kizer Wilson and husband Clarence of Maple Fork, WV, and Dana Kizer of Mount Hope, WV; 2 step-sons, James Hoke of Asbury, WV and William Hoke of, Asbury, WV; siblings; Ruby Carol Jollay, from Mount Hope WV, Betty Jo Stover from Niceville, FL, and Franklin Harvey Kizer and wife Ruth from Elizabethtown, Kentucky. He was a grandfather to 5 grandchildren; Amy Kizer Welty, Chad Kizer, Dustin Kizer, Joshua Wilson, Kasey Kizer Kessler; step-grandfather to 2; Lena Hoke, and Austin Hoke; and great-grandfather to 4 great-grandchildren; Harley Kizer, Victoria Wilson, Paisley Kizer, and Ryker Kizer.
The funeral service will be held at 1:00 pm on December 26, 2018 at Tyree Funeral Home in Mt. Hope, WV. Pastor Jesse Parker of First Assembly of God will be officiating. Visitation will be held at 11:00 am for family and 12:00 pm for friends on December 26, 2018 at Tyree Funeral Home in Mt. Hope, WV. Burial will follow the funeral at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens in Beckley, WV.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to Bowers Hospice House. The family of John Edward Kizer wishes to thank the staff from Bowers Hospice House for their care and support of John during this time.
