Edsel Eugene Armentrout

September 16, 1931 — February 15, 2018

Edsel Eugene Armentrout passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Thursday, February 15, 2018.

He was born on September 16, 1931 in Kilsyth, WV, later moving to Bradley where he lived for over 30 years. He most recently lived in Summers County on a gentleman’s farm by the Greenbrier River that he shared with his wife and best friend, Sharon Ann Rogers Armentrout.

He was drafted into the US Army in 1950, serving two years before returning home, marrying, and completing his Associate’s Degree in Business from Beckley College. He worked at Kroger for 16 years and in 1967 started his own grocery store business, Eddie’s Market.

Edsel worked alongside the love of his life, Sharon, as they owned and operated Eddie’s Market in Bradley for over 30 years. Their 59 years of marriage were his most cherished moments in life until her death in January of 2015. They had a love affair to surpass any fairy tale, making each other whole.

He was the son of the late Richard and Adoulia Cooper Armentrout. He was preceded in death by his siblings: Janice Lemons, Calvin Armentrout, Parker Armentrout, Willadean Parker, and Charles Armentrout. He is survived by his sister Sharon Johnson.

Left to cherish his memory are his children Karen Kay Ivey, Roger Dale Armentrout, and Deborah Ann (Michael) Jackson, grandchildren Sarah (Ian) Whitehurst, Joshua (Becky) Proffitt, Zachary Armentrout, Katelyn Armentrout, Tazwell Armentrout, and Ben Jackson, great-grandchildren Ethan Whitehurst, Audrey Whitehurst, and Hunter Whitehurst, and many other dear family and friends including Deb Evans.

Edsel was a devout Christian and a member of Bradley First Baptist Church and most recently attended Little Wolf Creek Baptist Church near his home in Summers County. He was the patriarch of his family and instilled the values of Christianity, hard work, dedication, and a strong moral compass. Edsel was a compassionate and generous man, always willing to help those around him. He was greatly respected and an inspiration to all.
His favorite times were spent with family and friends playing Scrabble, Hearts, and watching WVU sports. He was quick witted and always had a cunning joke for any situation.

Family and friends will be received Sunday, February 18, 2018 from 1:00PM to 3:00PM at the Mt. Hope Tyree Funeral Home. The service celebrating his life will be held at 3:00PM immediately following the visitation, officiated by Preacher Eddie Harris. Entombment will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens’ Mausoleum.
