Mack Tyree

May 3, 1929 — February 2, 2018

A former resident of Beckley, West Virginia, Mack Tyree, 88, passed at the Holyoke Soldier’s Home in Holyoke, MA on Friday, February 2, 2018. He served in the Army during World War II as a Guard Patrolman with the 511th Parachute Infantry Regiment patrolling restricted areas, guarding military property and protecting personnel.

Mack was born May 3, 1929 to Clark and Bernice Kelly Tyree and joins his parents, and siblings, Wallace Clark (WC), Joe, George, and Frank who passed before him.

He leaves his sister, Bessie Waine and husband, Charles; many nieces and nephews; loving daughters, Elaine Scalia Rushford of Enfield, CT and Corinne Lucania and husband, Frank of McKinney, TX, and Brenda Flowers and husband, Ed of Crystal River, FL; and son, Thomas Bernard and wife, Kathy of Windsor Locks, CT.

He leaves grandchildren, Shane Starzyk of Las Vegas, NV, Christopher Rushford of East Longmeadow, MA, Todd Rushford and wife, Chrissie of Ft. Walton Beach, FL, Spencer and Ali Bernard of Windsor Locks, CT, and Sam Lucania of Dallas, TX; along with great grandchildren, Addison and Noah Rushford of East Longmeadow, MA, Emilee Rushford Dickson and husband, Chase of Petal, MS, and Erik, Zachery and Sean Rushford of Ft. Walton Beach, FL.

He traveled the world working in Niagara Falls, Vietnam, Egypt, Nigeria and various other locations as a crane operator engineer. After his travels he retired and settled down in his home town of Beckley until 2 ½ years ago where he went to live with his daughter, Elaine Scalia Rushford and Joseph Scalia in West Springfield until moving into his own two family home in Springfield, MA.

He loved to dance, especially square dancing and ballroom dancing which he continued to do until shortly before his passing. He loved watching westerns and reading Louis L’Amour and after becoming legally blind he would listen to his books on tape provided by the Perkins Institute for the Blind. Upon his retirement he could be found working on his 24 acres in the Holler of Beckley, WV where he would brush hog his fields and work on his tractor. He was his happiest just being outdoors and being on the property that he loved that overlooked his family home across the street. A special thank you to Frank Tyree who helped him on his farm.

He loved getting a bite to eat and meeting friends at Kelly’s Corner as they gathered around the “liars table” to talk, laugh and share stories. He was a decent and humble man.

Our deepest thanks and appreciation also go to those who made his final years happy and fulfilling. Phyllis Stauchman who was the love of his life; his dear friends at the Moose Lodge in Beckley; friends Joseph Scalia, Sue Napolitano and Steve Rushford; and his home caregivers, Holly Daniels and Erin Daniels, to whom we couldn’t have done it without them. To all those who provided his care through the VA and to everyone at the Soldiers Home in Holyoke, MA who cared for him in his final days providing him dignity to the very end and to everyone else who knew him and cared for him. Each giving him friendship and laughter and who took the time to listen to his stories of his adventures and made him feel loved, respected and valued.
