Larry G. Dotson

August 17, 1938 — June 24, 2018

Larry Gene Dotson, 79, of Oak Hill, WV passed away peacefully in his home on Sunday, June 24 while surrounded by loved ones.

Born in Cunard, WV on August 17, 1938, he is the son of the late James Nelson and Ada Bennett Dotson. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Rita, and siblings Maxine, Jimmy Ray, Gloria, Curtis, Phyllis, and Louie.

Larry is survived by his two daughters, Tammy Lilly of Columbia, SC and Dee Dotson of Charleston, WV, granddaughters Amy Hanna (Grey) and Rachel Rivenbark (Patrick) all of Charlotte, NC and four great grandchildren Caroline, Bennett, Dylan and Isaiah that will dearly miss their “Pops”.  He also leaves behind many nieces, nephews and friends he regarded as family. A special thank you to his caregiver, Patricia Myrice.

Larry was raised in Minden, WV before moving and living most of his adult life in Oak Hill.  He proudly served his country as a United States Marine and dedicated his life as a public servant.  He was a Fayette County Magistrate, served as the Sheriff of Fayette County and worked for the WV State Treasurer until his death. He also served on various committees and boards within Fayette County and was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.  He truly loved his City, County and State. A true West Virginian at heart.

Larry will be fondly remembered by his loved ones as a generous man who was fair, honest and the patriarch of his family.  He was a well respected member of his community and was always there to share his wisdom and advice or lend a helping hand. Larry had a wonderful sense of humor and could put a smile on anybody’s face with a joke or a wiggle of an ear.  He enjoyed playing softball, bowling, fishing and golfing. Even when it was difficult, his dedication to the Chicago Cubs never wavered.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday June 28 at 11 am at Calvary Baptist Church in Oak Hill conducted by Pastor Greg Swisher. Entombment to follow at High Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum.  Pallbearers will be family and friends.

Visitation will be Wednesday, June 27 from 12-3 pm and 5-8 pm at Calvary Baptist Church.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Calvary Baptist Church 1424 East Main Street, Oak Hill, WV 25901.
